[ About ]
Why winnower.
The name is the job description.
[ The story ]
Keep the grain. Cut the rest.
What's worth keeping
Not everything that grows deserves to stay. A winnower keeps what holds its shape and lets the wind take the rest, which is where the tagline comes from: every page in its final shape.
Why it exists
winnower began as a way to stop paying for an ad blocker, one kept mostly because it blocked ads on YouTube. winnower blocks ads on YouTube too, including pre-roll and mid-roll, and it blocks ads, trackers and popups everywhere else.
Free for good
No paid tier, no account and nothing held back for a premium version. winnower is open source under GPL-3.0, and it sends nothing anywhere, as the privacy page explains.
The lists it stands on
Most of the blocking comes from community filter lists: the uBlock Origin filters, EasyList, and Peter Lowe's ad and tracking server list. It also uses AdGuard's Scriptlets and DNR converter.
Every list and its licence is in the README.

A leaf, cut clean.
The logo files, what they're made of, and how to use them.
Use the logo to link to winnower or to write about it. Please don't use it for a fork or another product, so people can tell the official winnower apart.
What it's made of
Winnowed
The leaf is the page you came for, and the tip it's missing is the excess: the ads, trackers and popups piled on top of it. winnower culls the excess, and the rest stays as it was.
A decision
One straight line, parallel to the w beside it. Every request winnower sees gets a clear answer, allowed or blocked, decided before it ever reaches the page.
Measured, not guessed
Every angle and gap in the logo comes from the font itself: the leaf reaches as far above the letters as below, and sits as far from the w as the o does from the next one. winnower works the same way: about 130,000 rules, not guesses about what looks like an ad.
A maker's mark
The underscore comes from meistyr_, the label that makes winnower. Like the mark a craftsman stamps into a tool, it's how software from meistyr is signed.
Two marks, two backgrounds
On dark and on light name the background each file is for. The two are drawn differently, not just recoloured: a light leaf on a dark background looks heavier, so it's drawn slightly thinner.
Lockup
The leaf and the winnower_ wordmark, outlined, so no font is needed.
Leaf
Where the mark stands alone: toolbar icons, favicons, avatars, inline next to text.
In the toolbar
The leaf is winnower's toolbar icon, at its real sizes here. The icons are cropped to the leaf so it fills the square, and at 16px the vein is left out and the stem kept one pixel wide.
Room and size
Clear space: lockup
One letter of winnower_ on every side.
Clear space: leaf
A quarter of the file's width on every side.
Minimum size
The lockup at 20px tall, its size in this site's navigation on phones. The leaf at 16px, the smallest toolbar icon.
Colour
The marks are one colour and take the colour of the text around them; only the underscore is green. The palette is winnower's menu's, and this site uses it too. The green is made for dark backgrounds: it's 10.8:1 on --bg, but only 1.7:1 on white.

Type
winnower's menu uses your system's fonts. Geist and Geist Mono are free under the SIL Open Font License.
Writing the name
Lowercase, always
winnower, even at the start of a sentence or in a title.
One word
Not win nower, or winnower adblock. winnower-adblock is only the name of the repository.
The underscore stays in the logo
winnower_ is the wordmark. In a sentence, it's winnower.
Said WIN-oh-er
Like winnow, the word it comes from, with -er on the end.
[ meistyr ]
More from meistyr.
One person makes winnower, under the name meistyr. The rest of the work is on meistyr.tech.
