Every request a page makes is checked first. The ones headed for ad servers and trackers never leave your browser, and winnower's menu keeps count of them on every tab.

What it doesn't do.
- Ads inside the stream
- Streaming ads that are stitched into the video itself are not blocked.
- Not on the Chrome Web Store
- No one-click install, and no automatic updates. The install guide walks you through both, and your settings are kept.
- Chrome and Chromium only
- It needs Chrome 121 or newer, or another Chromium browser.
- A site might break
- Blocking can occasionally stop part of a page from working. Pause winnower on that site from the toolbar and it loads as normal.
- YouTube changes often
- When it does, ads there can come back until winnower is updated.
- Some ads will slip through
- No filter list catches everything, and new ads turn up every day. If you spot one, report it on GitHub.
- 1Download winnower.zip and unzip it.
- 2Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode.
- 3Click Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder.
